Using Your Network to Help Your Career Development

As I advanced my career in healthcare leadership, I had a strong desire to serve in the community in which I worked. It had been a dream of mine to serve on the board of directors of an organization with a connection to healthcare. I had recently been appointed to the board of directors at Case Western Reserve University, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. I was very happy with my contribution to that organization but I did not feel quite fulfilled.

I searched the internet for worthy organizations and found the Healthcare Diversity Council, a branch of the National Diversity Council. I felt a strong connection to the vision and mission of the organization. I was certain I could translate my experiences into positive advocacy for diversity and inclusion in healthcare. I was appointed to the board of directors and it has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

As a board member of the Healthcare Diversity Council I have had the opportunity to network with healthcare executives throughout the state of Louisiana and nationwide. I deliver Keynote speeches on diversity and inclusion and the impact on healthcare to healthcare executives throughout the industry. It’s an opportunity to change the conversation and perception of diversity to be more inclusive and relevant to today’s challenges.
